 Our mission at Grace Foundation is to nurture sustainable ecosystems where people and nature flourish side by side. Recent research from northwestern Zimbabwe shows how this vision is being realised, and today, Matetsi Private Game Reserve stands as a shining example of what happens when conservation is given the care and commitment it deserves: leopards are thriving.

The 2023 Zimbabwe National Leopard Monitoring Project, led by 

, assessed leopard density and distribution across Zambezi National Park and the northern Matetsi Safari Area, including Matetsi Private Game Reserve and the unrelated Matetsi Unit 6. The findings are striking: Matetsi recorded one of the highest leopard densities in Zimbabwe

, approximately 3.11 leopards per 100 km²

This figure underscores Matetsi Private Game Reserve’s role as a conservation stronghold, where leopards are not only surviving but flourishing. Camera traps and spoor surveys revealed multiple resident males and females, with evidence of movement into Zambezi National Park. This connectivity is vital for long‑term metapopulation health and demonstrates the effectiveness of unfenced, well‑protected landscapes.

The success of Matetsi Private Game Reserve is no accident. It is the result of the GRACE Foundation’s guiding philosophy that conservation must benefit both wildlife and people. The deliberate factors that make Matetsi Private Game Reserve stand out are :

Mud Miracle: Amaganyane Team Rescues "Dugga Boy" Buffalo from Deadly Trap 

In a dramatic rescue operation that showcased their unwavering commitment to wildlife preservation, the Amaganyane anti-poaching team successfully freed an old "dugga boy" buffalo trapped in a treacherous mud pit on Matetsi Private Game Reserve. This remarkable feat, highlighting the team's bravery and expertise, averted a potentially tragic outcome for a vulnerable member of the reserve's iconic buffalo population.

A Desperate Situation: Buffalo Trapped in Deadly Mud

The term "dugga boy" refers to an old, solitary male buffalo, often known for their resilience and survival instincts. However, even these formidable animals can fall victim to the unpredictable challenges of the African wilderness. In this instance, the aging buffalo found itself ensnared in a deep mud pit, a potentially deadly trap that threatened to claim its life.

The Amaganyane team, renowned for their intimate knowledge of the reserve and their dedication to wildlife protection, responded swiftly to reports of the trapped animal. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, they embarked on a challenging rescue operation, navigating difficult terrain to reach the distressed buffalo.

A Test of Skill and Bravery: The Amaganyane Rescue

The rescue operation tested the team's skills and bravery. Extracting a massive, distressed buffalo from a mud pit is a dangerous undertaking, requiring careful planning and execution. The Amaganyane team, however, approached the situation with professionalism and determination (one of the core Amaganyane values).

They employed a combination of physical strength, equipment, and their deep understanding of buffalo behavior to extricate the animal from the mud. The operation required immense patience and composure, as the team worked to minimize stress and prevent further injury to the already weakened buffalo.

After a tense and arduous effort, the Amaganyane team successfully freed the buffalo from its muddy prison. The animal, exhausted but alive, was able not only to regain its footing, but also to charge its rescuers before heading back to its natural habitat.

"We do not leave a buffalo behind," a team member stated, "He got stuck in mud, and the team was there to rescue him. Like a pack of Amaganyane (wild dogs), the team worked together and set the buffalo free. As a thank you, he charged at them, and with well-coordinated maneuvers, the team evaded the grateful bull. At the end, it was a win-win for team Amaganyane and the buffalo herd."

Amaganyane's Grit: Buffalo Rescue from the Deep

At Grace Foundation, each day serves as a reminder of our mission: to serve, protect, and instill hope where it appears to dwindle. Yet, some days shine with unparalleled brilliance! Today, amidst the breathtaking landscape of Matetsi Victoria Falls, we bore witness to the incredible power of unity, expertise, and relentless compassion. What began as a standard conservation patrol evolved into a day etched in our memories forever.

In the heart of the wilderness, our team encountered two magnificent African elephants, both in urgent need of assistance. The first, a young bull, had a steel snare that had cruelly tightened around its ear and trunk, tearing into living tissue.  The second, a strong adult bull, was injured by a sharp object deeply embedded in the underside of its foot, a wound about 10cm deep. But on this day, their struggle became our mission. 

What transpired next was nothing short of remarkable. Under the savvy leadership of the Matetsi Conservation Manager, and propelled by the unyielding commitment of the Anti-Poaching Unit (APU) and the Guiding team, a meticulously planned rescue unfolded. 

Every individual played a crucial role. Every choice mattered. Every moment was critical. Our heartfelt gratitude extends to Harley from the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust (VFWT), whose expert darting ensured both elephants could receive the treatment they so desperately needed.

Once the elephants were safely immobilized, our team sprang into action with care and precision:

Two magnificent lives were saved. Two futures were renewed. The wilderness exhaled a sigh of relief once more.

Today transcended a mere rescue; it was a glorious celebration of what unfolds when compassion meets action. It exemplified true stewardship, a profound dedication to protecting creation, and the incredible power we wield when we unite.

Elephant DeSnaring: A Remarkable Rescue at Matetsi

2025 brought an exciting conservation milestone for Matetsi Private Game Reserve: the successful collaring of a lion and lioness for the very first time. This project was undertaken in collaboration with the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust and marks a major step forward in our long-term commitment to understanding and protecting our predator populations.

The lion and lioness, known as Rocky and Ruby respectively, will play a central role in helping us better understand the behaviour, movements and social dynamics of lions and other predators across the Matetsi Private Game Reserve landscape and beyond.

Collaring Rocky and Ruby will allow our conservation team and the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust to gather and understand high-quality real-time data on lions’ home range size, territorial boundaries, movement corridors, interactions with neighbouring prides, habitat patterns across various ecosystems, and the broader predator ecology within the Matetsi landscape.

This level of insight aids our understanding of how lions use the landscape, how far they roam and the ecological pressures they navigate within the greater Kavango-Zambezi (KAZA) Trans-Frontier Conservation Area (TFCA).

Rocky is a powerful young male lion who spends much of his time around the Westwood Vlei, an area known for high wildlife densities, abundant water supply and prime open hunting grounds. Since being collared, he has revealed a far wider range than we initially expected, sometimes walking as far as the Kasane Forest, which is 84km – 97km from Matetsi Private Game Reserve.

Throughout November alone, Rocky Travelled from Westwood Vlei to the most Southern point of Matetsi private Game Reserve, which is 136-000 acres (55-000 hectares) and even into neighbouring concessions. These early findings demonstrate just how expansive lion movements can be and reinforces the importance of connected and well-protected landscapes.

Rocky is also part of an interesting social dynamic as he frequently trails a mating pair, with the dominant male being his brother. This behaviour is typical of young male lions who are forming early coalitions, allowing them to strengthen social bonds and learn about the territorial and behavioural dynamics of the pride.  

Ruby is from the well-known Famous Five pride and is equally fascinating. She is often seen in the company of her cubs and moves confidently across the landscape. She regularly travels between Matetsi Private Game Reserve and the neighbouring Zambezi National Park to the east, reminding us of the fluid nature of wildlife boundaries in this part of the world and how interconnected these protected areas truly are.

In the months ahead, Rocky and Ruby’s collars will continue to transmit valuable data in the, giving us a deeper understanding of lion ecology within Matetsi Private Game Reserve and the greater Victoria Falls region. Their unique movements and social interactions will contribute to a clearer picture of how lions navigate shifting territories, neighbouring concessions, and the larger KAZA TFCA landscape. 

Tracking Rocky and Ruby: Lion Research Project

At Grace Foundation, we are always proud to support experiences that empower and inspire young people. We had the privilege of facilitating a very special outing for the 

 enrolled in the City School of Photography programme.

To celebrate their graduation, the learners were invited to spend a day at the breathtaking 

. For many of the children, this was their first-ever encounter with some of Zimbabwe’s remarkable wildlife, and watching their excitement as they captured these moments through their cameras was truly heartwarming.

This visit was more than just a field trip. It was an opportunity for the students to put their new skills into practice, connect with nature, and see the world from a fresh, creative perspective. Their dedication throughout the course has been inspiring, and this experience was a beautiful way to honour their hard work.

 for making this memorable day possible. Their support and partnership play a vital role in creating meaningful learning opportunities for the youth in our community. We are especially thankful for their generosity and warm hospitality throughout the visit.

Lesedi School Photography Students Visit Matetsi Private Game Reserve

This year marked an important milestone for Matetsi Private Game Reserve and the GRACE Foundation, one that will shape the future of our conservation work. After months of preparation, we completed our first-ever aerial survey of the 136,000-acre (55,000-hectare) Matetsi Private Game Reserve. This achievement was the first of its kind in the Victoria Falls area and marked a major step forward in improving how we monitor wildlife populations, assess habitat conditions and inform conservation planning and decision-making.

Aerial counts are one of the most effective ways to accurately assess wildlife populations across a landscape as vast and varied as Matetsi Private Game Reserve. From above, we are able to establish a baseline of animal populations, monitor key species, evaluate habitat conditions, and identify and track changes and trends that aren’t always visible from the ground.

This baseline dataset, which is being established using cutting edge technology, will serve as a critical reference point for years to come and will help us measure the impact of our conservation interventions, and plan with even greater precision. It is a proud moment for our team and a meaningful step toward deepening our understanding of this incredible ecosystem.

Preliminary Findings: A Thriving Landscape

While the final report will be released in early 2026, the preliminary results have filled our team with immense joy and validation. The survey confirmed that we have many thriving species including impala, elephant - and buffalo and proves that the 

aren’t exaggerating when they say they see herds of 800-1,000 buffalo.

One of the most heartening findings was the near doubling of our waterbuck population since their 

 in August 2022 from Hwange National Park to Matetsi Private Game Reserve. Seeing these Waterbuck reclaim this landscape and flourish is a true testament to our long-term vision, dedicated ecological management, and the tireless work of our team.

Completing this aerial survey gives us something we have never had before: a clear, data-driven picture of our wildlife populations. This insight will help guide our conservation decisions year after year, ensuring that Matetsi Private Game Reserve continues to be a safe, thriving, and bountiful landscape for generations to come.

A New Chapter for Conservation: Matetsi’s First-Ever Aerial Wildlife Survey

On Monday, 24 November, something significant, almost historic, occurred in our workspace. For one afternoon, 57 men came together, not as supervisors, fathers, partners, or providers…

 But simply as men who needed a moment to catch their breath.

Men’s Voice: Empowerment & Balance Session

 was planned as a short, one-hour motivational presentation. But what unfolded went far beyond inspiration. It became a release. A mirror. A safe corner where men finally said the things they had kept inside for years.

Across the 57 attendees, certain themes kept repeating:

Many admitted they are tired, not physically, but emotionally drained.

 Yet they push through because “men don’t rest.”

 “Even if I earn less, I am expected to provide more, because I am the man.”

This expectation breaks many men silently.

Some spoke about marriages or relationships where they feel unheard, unvalued, or emotionally abused, but fear speaking out because society will call them weak.

Men shared how personal issues affect their concentration and performance.

 But instead of support, they often feel watched or judged.

Many said they suffer in silence because they have no safe place to express vulnerability, not at home, not with friends, and not at work.

“If I break down, who will take care of everything?”

WHY THIS SESSION MATTERS MORE THAN WE REALIZED?

Globally, around 80% of suicide cases involve men.

 Men are not breaking because they are weak.

 Men are breaking down because they are carrying too much on their own.

THIS WAS NOT THE END, IT WAS THE BEGINNING;

The Men’s Voice Session did more than spark a conversation; it exposed a reality that has been ignored for years. When 57 men openly expressed that one hour was not enough to release even a fraction of what they have been carrying, it became clear that this initiative cannot be a “once-off event.”

The session opened a door to truths that cannot be closed again.

 We now understand that men are not looking for entertainment or motivational speeches; they are looking for places where they can finally remove the mask.

Because of this, the next steps are not optional; they are necessary.

1. Smaller Group Sessions, Real Conversations Need Privacy

During the session, several members shared that they could not fully open up because the group was too large.

 A smaller, more intimate setting would allow:

For some men, speaking in a group of 57 is intimidating. But in a group of 6–10, healing becomes possible.

 These smaller circles will focus on both 

 that affect performance, behaviour, and mental well-being.

2. More Frequent Discussions, Because Pain Doesn’t Follow a Schedule

If men only get one chance a year to talk, the silence between sessions becomes a danger zone.

Instead of waiting for men to reach breaking point, we give them continuous support.

Every man’s struggle is different. Some deal with:

Topic-based circles will allow men to attend sessions that speak directly to what they are going through.

This ensures that no man feels alone in his specific struggle.

Many men admitted they don’t know how to identify burnout, depression, or emotional overload until it becomes severe.

 Educational engagements will help men understand:

Creating awareness does not make men weaker; it makes them stronger, stable, and present in both their work and personal lives.

The Men’s Voice Session showed us one powerful truth: when men are finally given space to speak, they reveal not weakness, but humanity. What began as a one-hour presentation has now grown into a movement, a commitment to supporting the emotional well-being of the men who keep our workplace, our homes, and our communities standing.

 It was the opening of a door that would lead to healing, growth, and stronger connections for everyone involved.

Men’s Voice Session : a Breakthrough Moment for the Unspoken Truths

, the GRACE Foundation had the distinct honour of attending and participating in the 

Chamabondo Primary School, Victoria Falls 

for the Vincent Bohlen Hub Class of 2025. This event marked a significant moment in our collaboration, one born of shared values, mutual respect, and a common mission to empower young Zimbabweans.

Notably, this graduating class from the Victoria Falls based hub, was the first from Matabeleland following the opening of the Vincent Bohlen hub in late 2024. Truly a momentous day, marking a significant milestone in Uncommon’s journey and a beacon of hope to the youth of the province.

Months earlier, Uncommon had reached out to the GRACE Foundation with a request that closely aligned with our work in community empowerment and youth development. They were seeking to place students from their Digital Marketing department in real-world work environments as part of their attachment program. What began as a conversation about taking on one student evolved into a deeper commitment. After interviewing four young women, the GRACE Foundation welcomed two interns, whose professionalism, curiosity, and eagerness to learn reflected the strong training and mentorship provided by

Revitalizing the Zambezi: Successful Waterbuck Translocation Boosts Biodiversity at Matetsi Private Game Reserve

The vast landscapes of Matetsi Private Game Reserve witnessed a remarkable conservation achievement in June 2022, as 14 waterbuck embarked on a critical journey from Hwange National Park to their new home along the life-giving Zambezi River. This collaborative effort, with the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZNPWMA) and African Wildlife Management and Conservation, marked a significant step in bolstering the region's biodiversity and ensuring a thriving ecosystem for generations to come.

A High-Stakes Operation: Ensuring Waterbuck Safety and Well-being

The translocation operation was a meticulously planned endeavor, prioritizing the safety and minimal stress of the waterbuck. An expert team, utilizing a helicopter for aerial capture, darted each animal with precision, ensuring swift and humane immobilization. The captured waterbuck were then carefully transported through the dense bush to a specialized vehicle for transit. Upon arrival, the team was on hand to administer reversal agents, gently reviving the animals and monitoring their vital signs.

Over two intense, action-packed days, Conservation Manager, Brian Gurney and the Amaganyane team, known for their expertise in wildlife management, worked tirelessly to ensure every detail of the translocation was executed with precision and care. This involved constant communication, meticulous record-keeping, and unwavering dedication to the animals' well-being. The operation showcased the power of collaborative conservation, bringing together diverse expertise for a common goal.

Settling In: A New Home Along the Zambezi

Upon arrival at Matetsi Private Game Reserve, the waterbuck were introduced to a specially constructed wildlife boma, strategically located along the lush banks of the Zambezi River. This transitional space provided a safe and controlled environment for the animals to acclimatize to their new surroundings. The boma was designed to mimic their natural habitat, offering ample grazing and access to water. This allowed the waterbuck to regain their strength and condition, preparing them for their release into the wild.

After a five-week period of adjustment, the waterbuck were deemed ready for their grand debut. The gates of the boma were opened, and the animals ventured into the vast wilderness of Matetsi Private Game Reserve. Since their release, they have thrived, frequently observed relaxing near the solar-powered waterholes, Namakana and Namaqua, under the shade of the iconic sausage trees. These waterholes, vital for wildlife survival, demonstrate the reserve's commitment to sustainable water management and habitat preservation.

This successful waterbuck translocation represents a significant conservation victory, not only for the animals themselves but for the entire Matetsi Private Game Reserve ecosystem. By introducing a healthy population of waterbuck, the reserve's biodiversity has been significantly enhanced, contributing to a more balanced and resilient environment. The Zambezi River, with its rich biodiversity and abundant resources, attracts various illegal activities, including poaching and illegal fishing. These activities pose a significant threat to the river's delicate ecosystem, disrupting natural balances and depleting fish populations. Illegal fishing, in particular, often involves the use of destructive nets that indiscriminately capture fish, including juvenile individuals, hindering population regeneration.

The Amaganyane anti-poaching unit understands the urgency of addressing these threats. Their patrols by boat along the Zambezi River, and by foot along the river banks and on the islands, are a crucial deterrent, sending a clear message that illegal activities will not be tolerated. These patrols are not just about enforcement; they also involve education and community engagement, fostering a sense of shared responsibility for the river's protection.

The Amaganyane unit's regular patrols along the Zambezi are essential for monitoring the river's health and detecting illegal activities. Equipped with a specialized boat and navigation technology, they cover extensive stretches of the river, keeping a vigilant eye for signs of poaching and illegal fishing.

One of their primary tasks is the removal of illegal fishing nets. These nets, often left unattended, continue to capture and kill fish, creating a devastating impact on fish populations. The Amaganyane team meticulously locates and removes these nets, preventing further damage and allowing fish populations to recover.

Their efforts extend beyond net removal. The unit also works to raise awareness among local communities about the detrimental effects of illegal fishing and the importance of sustainable fishing practices. By engaging with communities and providing education, they are fostering a culture of responsible resource management.

The Amaganyane anti-poaching unit's work is crucial for protecting the Zambezi River's rich biodiversity. The river provides habitat for a diverse range of aquatic species, including fish, reptiles, and mammals. Matetsi's Ostrich Reintroduction Progress: Young Ostriches Thrive, Roaming and Learning Natural Feeding Habits

Six months ago, GRACE Foundation embarked on a crucial ostrich reintroduction program on Matetsi Private Game Reserve, introducing a flock of adorable ostrich chicks, affectionately known as "the chickens," to this vital wilderness area. Today, we're delighted to share a significant progress report: these young ostriches are flourishing, demonstrating remarkable growth and successfully transitioning to natural feeding and roaming habits. This milestone brings us closer to restoring the locally endangered ostrich population within the Matetsi ecosystem.

“Most of the ostriches now have full adult plumage, and we can tell the difference between the grey-feathered females and the black-feathered males.”

 says Roseline Midzi, part of GRACE’s Amaganyane team, who has worked closely with the ostriches since their arrival on Matetsi Private Game Reserve.

The transformation of these chicks into robust young ostriches is a testament to the dedication of our wildlife team and the effectiveness of our regenerative conservation efforts. They have undergone a rapid developmental phase, transitioning from dependent chicks, requiring specialized feed, to successful grazers, adept at foraging for their natural diet. This transition is a key indicator of their readiness for eventual release into the wider reserve.

Our team has had a keen focus on the ostriches’ diet, ensuring the specialised feed has the variety of nutrients required for growth and development. More recently, our team have been keenly monitoring their dietary adaptation, observing their enthusiastic exploration of their spacious wildlife boma, and roaming around its proximity on Matetsi Private Game Reserve. They are now confidently exploring remarkable distances and pecking at a variety of grasses, seeds, and insects (we suspect), demonstrating a growing understanding of the Matetsi ecosystem and the natural food sources here. This natural feeding behavior is not only crucial for their nutritional well-being but also plays a vital role in maintaining the biodiversity of the reserve. Ostriches contribute to seed dispersal and grazing patterns, influencing the overall health of the ecosystem.

Beyond their feeding habits, the young ostriches are also developing essential social skills, forming strong bonds within their group and establishing a natural hierarchy, with a dominant female, who already alerts the flock of perceived danger, protects them and calls them in if a group defence is required. They are becoming more confident and agile, practicing their running, and defence strategies, and adapting to exposure to the elements (sun, wind, rain). These are all vital skills for survival in the wild.

Roseline explains further that the ostriches are spending more and more time outside of the wildlife boma walking longer distances to ensure they develop leg-strength, which they require for survival, “

They will be walking long distances as they search for food and water. They fight with their legs, they run with their legs. They are learning quickly and adapting well, proving their resilience and adaptability."

Kituso Primary School, nestled within the heart of the Monde region in Zimbabwe, has reached a significant milestone in its journey toward sustainable water access. For years, the school, a vital hub for education and community life, grappled with the debilitating effects of unreliable water supply. Currently, the school relies on a small, inadequate water tank, and water is transported from a borehole via donkey cart. This laborious and inefficient method is not only time-consuming but also unreliable, often resulting in insufficient water supply for the school's daily needs. Furthermore, the risk of contamination during transport poses a significant health hazard. This chronic shortage not only disrupted daily routines but also posed severe health risks to students and teachers, hindering their ability to thrive. Access to clean water is a fundamental human right, and its absence creates a ripple effect, impacting education, health, and overall community well-being.

The Kituso Water Project: A Sustainable Solution

To address this pressing issue, the GRACE Foundation partnered with the resilient Kituso community to develop the Kituso Water Project, an initiative designed to deliver long-term water security. The initial plan to drill a dedicated borehole at the school was deemed unfeasible due to the region's arid conditions. However, through careful assessment and innovative thinking, a sustainable alternative was identified: extending a pipeline from a nearby, reliable borehole to the school grounds. This solution promises a consistent water supply, ensuring the school's needs are met while minimizing environmental impact. This new pipeline will replace the current, unsustainable method of transporting water by donkey cart, providing a reliable and safe water source directly to the school.

The project's current phase has seen the successful installation of a robust solar-powered pump and solar panels, harnessing the region's abundant sunlight to power the water distribution system. The next critical step involves trenching for the pipeline, a task that will be undertaken by the local community, fostering a sense of ownership and shared responsibility.

Impala Resilience: Matetsi Translocation Boosts KAZA Biodiversity Amidst Potential Drought

Matetsi Private Game Reserve, a vital component of the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA), recently completed a crucial impala translocation initiative. This operation, conducted during a period of heightened concern as a result of low annual rainfall and potential imminent drought conditions, underscores the proactive measures being taken to ensure the resilience of wildlife populations within this globally significant ecosystem. The successful translocation not only bolsters impala numbers within the boundless Matetsi Private Game Reserve but also contributes to the broader ecological health of the KAZA region.

Why Impala Translocation During a Potential Drought Year?

In regions prone to seasonal aridity, such as the KAZA area, wildlife populations are particularly vulnerable to the effects of drought and their populations can be significantly impacted by reduced grazing resources and limited water availability.

While impala are currently classified as a species of least concern on the IUCN Red List, their ecological impact is significant. This key herbivore species plays a vital role in the balance of the ecosystem. As highly successful browsers and grazers, they can influence vegetation structure and composition within their habitat. However, unchecked populations can lead to overgrazing, potentially degrading habitat quality and affecting other species.

This translocation, therefore, is not only about boosting impala numbers but also about strategically managing their population to ensure a balanced and healthy ecosystem within Matetsi Private Game Reserve and the wider KAZA region.

This translocation initiative, involving the movement of 100 impalas, was strategically timed to mitigate the potential effects of a looming drought. A healthy population of impala was translocated from the northern part of Matetsi Private Game Reserve to the south of the concession, ensuring a diverse and resilient herbivore population, capable of withstanding environmental pressures. This proactive approach helps maintain the ecological integrity of the reserve, even during challenging climatic conditions.
