The vast landscapes of Matetsi Private Game Reserve witnessed a remarkable conservation achievement in June 2022, as 14 waterbuck embarked on a critical journey from Hwange National Park to their new home along the life-giving Zambezi River. This collaborative effort, with the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZNPWMA) and African Wildlife Management and Conservation, marked a significant step in bolstering the region's biodiversity and ensuring a thriving ecosystem for generations to come.

A High-Stakes Operation: Ensuring Waterbuck Safety and Well-being

The translocation operation was a meticulously planned endeavor, prioritizing the safety and minimal stress of the waterbuck. An expert team, utilizing a helicopter for aerial capture, darted each animal with precision, ensuring swift and humane immobilization. The captured waterbuck were then carefully transported through the dense bush to a specialized vehicle for transit. Upon arrival, the team was on hand to administer reversal agents, gently reviving the animals and monitoring their vital signs.

Over two intense, action-packed days, Conservation Manager, Brian Gurney and the Amaganyane team, known for their expertise in wildlife management, worked tirelessly to ensure every detail of the translocation was executed with precision and care. This involved constant communication, meticulous record-keeping, and unwavering dedication to the animals' well-being. Settling In: A New Home Along the Zambezi

Upon arrival at Matetsi Private Game Reserve, the waterbuck were introduced to a specially constructed wildlife boma, strategically located along the lush banks of the Zambezi River. This transitional space provided a safe and controlled environment for the animals to acclimatize to their new surroundings. The boma was designed to mimic their natural habitat, offering ample grazing and access to water. This allowed the waterbuck to regain their strength and condition, preparing them for their release into the wild.

After a five-week period of adjustment, the waterbuck were deemed ready for their grand debut. The gates of the boma were opened, and the animals ventured into the vast wilderness of Matetsi Private Game Reserve. Since their release, they have thrived, frequently observed relaxing near the solar-powered waterholes, Namakana and Namaqua, under the shade of the iconic sausage trees. These waterholes, vital for wildlife survival, demonstrate the reserve's commitment to sustainable water management and habitat preservation.

Six months ago, GRACE Foundation embarked on a crucial ostrich reintroduction program on Matetsi Private Game Reserve, introducing a flock of adorable ostrich chicks, affectionately known as "the chickens," to this vital wilderness area. Today, we're delighted to share a significant progress report: these young ostriches are flourishing, demonstrating remarkable growth and successfully transitioning to natural feeding and roaming habits. This milestone brings us closer to restoring the locally endangered ostrich population within the Matetsi ecosystem.

“Most of the ostriches now have full adult plumage, and we can tell the difference between the grey-feathered females and the black-feathered males.”

 says Roseline Midzi, part of GRACE’s Amaganyane team, who has worked closely with the ostriches since their arrival on Matetsi Private Game Reserve.

The transformation of these chicks into robust young ostriches is a testament to the dedication of our wildlife team and the effectiveness of our regenerative conservation efforts. They have undergone a rapid developmental phase, transitioning from dependent chicks, requiring specialized feed, to successful grazers, adept at foraging for their natural diet. This transition is a key indicator of their readiness for eventual release into the wider reserve.

Our team has had a keen focus on the ostriches’ diet, ensuring the specialised feed has the variety of nutrients required for growth and development. More recently, our team have been keenly monitoring their dietary adaptation, observing their enthusiastic exploration of their spacious wildlife boma, and roaming around its proximity on Matetsi Private Game Reserve. They are now confidently exploring remarkable distances and pecking at a variety of grasses, seeds, and insects (we suspect), demonstrating a growing understanding of the Matetsi ecosystem and the natural food sources here. This natural feeding behavior is not only crucial for their nutritional well-being but also plays a vital role in maintaining the biodiversity of the reserve. Ostriches contribute to seed dispersal and grazing patterns, influencing the overall health of the ecosystem.

Beyond their feeding habits, the young ostriches are also developing essential social skills, forming strong bonds within their group and establishing a natural hierarchy, with a dominant female, who already alerts the flock of perceived danger, protects them and calls them in if a group defence is required. They are becoming more confident and agile, practicing their running, and defence strategies, and adapting to exposure to the elements (sun, wind, rain). These are all vital skills for survival in the wild.

Roseline explains further that the ostriches are spending more and more time outside of the wildlife boma walking longer distances to ensure they develop leg-strength, which they require for survival, “

They will be walking long distances as they search for food and water. They fight with their legs, they run with their legs. They are learning quickly and adapting well, proving their resilience and adaptability."

Kituso Primary School, nestled within the heart of the Monde region in Zimbabwe, has reached a significant milestone in its journey toward sustainable water access. For years, the school, a vital hub for education and community life, grappled with the debilitating effects of unreliable water supply. Currently, the school relies on a small, inadequate water tank, and water is transported from a borehole via donkey cart. This laborious and inefficient method is not only time-consuming but also unreliable, often resulting in insufficient water supply for the school's daily needs. Furthermore, the risk of contamination during transport poses a significant health hazard. This chronic shortage not only disrupted daily routines but also posed severe health risks to students and teachers, hindering their ability to thrive. Access to clean water is a fundamental human right, and its absence creates a ripple effect, impacting education, health, and overall community well-being.

The Kituso Water Project: A Sustainable Solution

To address this pressing issue, the GRACE Foundation partnered with the resilient Kituso community to develop the Kituso Water Project, an initiative designed to deliver long-term water security. Matetsi Private Game Reserve, a vital component of the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA), recently completed a crucial impala translocation initiative. This operation, conducted during a period of heightened concern as a result of low annual rainfall and potential imminent drought conditions, underscores the proactive measures being taken to ensure the resilience of wildlife populations within this globally significant ecosystem. The successful translocation not only bolsters impala numbers within the boundless Matetsi Private Game Reserve but also contributes to the broader ecological health of the KAZA region.

Why Impala Translocation During a Potential Drought Year?

In regions prone to seasonal aridity, such as the KAZA area, wildlife populations are particularly vulnerable to the effects of drought and their populations can be significantly impacted by reduced grazing resources and limited water availability.

While impala are currently classified as a species of least concern on the IUCN Red List, their ecological impact is significant. This key herbivore species plays a vital role in the balance of the ecosystem. As highly successful browsers and grazers, they can influence vegetation structure and composition within their habitat. However, unchecked populations can lead to overgrazing, potentially degrading habitat quality and affecting other species.

This translocation, therefore, is not only about boosting impala numbers but also about strategically managing their population to ensure a balanced and healthy ecosystem within Matetsi Private Game Reserve and the wider KAZA region.

This translocation initiative, involving the movement of 100 impalas, was strategically timed to mitigate the potential effects of a looming drought. A healthy population of impala was translocated from the northern part of Matetsi Private Game Reserve to the south of the concession, ensuring a diverse and resilient herbivore population, capable of withstanding environmental pressures. This proactive approach helps maintain the ecological integrity of the reserve, even during challenging climatic conditions.

The increased antelope (prey) populations will also benefit the predators (including leopard and wild dog) in the southern sector. This positive ripple effect is something that we have seen over this last decade of conservation work on Matetsi Private Game Reserve, as the prey populations increase, so the predators also thrive.

The benefits of the translocation extend beyond the lines on maps that demarcate Matetsi Private Game Reserve, positively impacting the wider KAZA region. KAZA, a vast transboundary conservation area spanning five countries, relies on the interconnectedness of its ecosystems. By maintaining healthy wildlife populations within individual reserves, such as Matetsi Private Game Reserve, the region ensures the continued flow of ecological services, such as seed dispersal, nutrient cycling, and predator-prey dynamics.

Proactive Protection: Impala Translocation

This holiday season, GRACE Foundation sought to create meaningful Christmas memories for the children and communities we serve in rural Zimbabwe. We aimed to bring the spirit of Christmas directly to the heart of Monde village and the Jafuta Women and Youth Empowerment Center. Our goal was to spread joy, create lasting memories, and strengthen the bonds within these vibrant communities.

Our journey began in the village of Monde, at Kituso Primary School. Partnering with the highly-respected Mr. Ncube, the school's founder, we organized a special Christmas celebration for the local children. With schools closed for the holidays, we wanted to ensure that the festive spirit reached these young hearts. On Saturday, December 21, 2025, the school grounds transformed into a hub of Christmas cheer and with Mr Ncube’s help, the school children were invited to gather for a day filled with fun and entertainment.

The highlight of the day was the arrival of Santa Claus, played by our dedicated volunteer, Mr. Tafadzwa Chaumba (HR Manager, Matetsi Victoria Falls). His infectious enthusiasm and genuine warmth brought smiles to the faces of every child (there was of course one baby that cried). Roseline Midzi (Amaganyane, GRACE Foundation), our invaluable team member, joined him, orchestrating a series of engaging games and activities that kept the children entertained and filled with laughter.

Santa's and his helpers worked tirelessly together to ensure that every child felt the magic of the season. To capture the magic of the moment, we also provided printed photos of each child with Santa, creating cherished keepsakes they could take home. For many of these children, this was their first encounter with Santa Claus, and their pure joy was a testament to the power of community and festive celebration.

The event was a resounding success, fostering a sense of unity and creating unforgettable Christmas memories for the children of Monde. Later that day, Roseline received a phone call from her Amaganyane colleague, Sebastian, who shared that his son couldn't stop talking about the day's events, especially the photo with Santa. "He can't stop talking about how much fun they had and the picture to top it off," Sebastian shared, his voice filled with warmth. This simple moment underscored the profound impact of our work, reminding us that the rural communities of Monde are not just beneficiaries, but our community, and that our efforts to bring joy and connection are deeply valued.

Jafuta Women and Youth Empowerment Center's Festive Day

In addition to the Kituso visit, GRACE Foundation also extended the Christmas spirit to the Jafuta Women and Youth Empowerment Center during their festive celebration on 20 December. Recognizing the vital role this center plays in empowering local communities, we wanted to do our bit to enhance their festive celebrations with a visit from Santa, treats for the children and a photo with Santa for them to take home. The day celebrated the spirit of togetherness and community, and the event underscored the importance of community support, collaboration, and the power of shared celebrations.

Saving Giants: GRACE Foundation & VFWT Rescue Elephants from Deadly Snares

In a remarkable display of dedication and teamwork, GRACE Foundation, in collaboration with the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust (VFWT), conducted a critical elephant desnaring operation at Matetsi Private Game Reserve in November 2024. This operation, a testament to the unwavering commitment to wildlife conservation, resulted in the successful rescue of two elephants, removing life-threatening wire snares that had become entangled around their limbs.

The Silent Threat: Wire Snares and Elephant Survival

Wire snares, set illegally to capture smaller game, pose a grave threat to elephants. These indiscriminate traps can cause severe injuries, leading to infections, limb amputation, and even death. The timely intervention of conservation teams like GRACE Foundation and VFWT is crucial in mitigating this threat and ensuring the survival of these iconic animals.

A Race Against Time: The Desnaring Operation

The operation commenced with reports of two injured elephants within the reserve. The GRACE Foundation's Amaganyane anti-poaching team, renowned for their tracking expertise, immediately mobilized to locate the affected animals. The urgency of the situation was paramount, as every passing hour increased the risk of severe complications.

The following quote from Conservation Manager Brian Gurney, highlighting the dedication of our team members, encapsulates the spirit of the operation:

"A very good effort to members of our Amaganyane team, including Roseline Midzi, who tracked on foot an injured elephant for over 5 hours, eventually leading to a successful darting and removal of the wire snare. A big thank you to Professor who jumped in the cruiser and assisted in tracking the second injured elephant. A very well done to all a perfect example of the skills and ethos we need as scouts."

This extraordinary effort, involving hours of tracking through challenging terrain, underscores the commitment and skill of our field teams. Once located, the elephants were carefully darted by VFWT veterinarians, allowing for the safe removal of the debilitating wire snares. The wounds were then treated, and the animals were monitored until they regained consciousness.

The project will create sustainable income streams for community members through ostrich farming and the sale of ostrich products, improving living standards and fostering financial stability.

In 2022, GRACE Foundation welcomed five rescue dogs from Friends Animal Foundation, marking the start of a transformative conservation initiative. These dogs were trained over six months to become skilled anti-poaching scouts, protecting wildlife while receiving the best care. This project symbolizes our commitment to both animal welfare and wildlife conservation

The journey began with state-of-the-art kennels and training support from Rescue Dogs for Wildlife. Since then, we have welcomed four additional rescue dogs, continuing the cycle of rescue, training, and retirement. Beyond their vital roles as wildlife protectors, we are committed to providing each dog with a high quality of life, including proper care, enrichment, and love.

GRACE Foundation is safeguarding the forests of Matabeleland North to protect its delicate ecosystem. Increased elephant populations, driven by breeding and migration, have placed immense pressure on the forests, threatening wildlife and the elephants themselves. By wrapping larger trees with wire, we aim to prevent ring-barking and ensure the survival of this vital habitat.

Matetsi’s forests are crucial for supporting diverse wildlife, including its growing elephant population in the Matabeleland North region. However, as elephants damage trees by pushing them down or ring-barking, the ecosystem faces significant strain. GRACE Foundation’s tree protection initiative focuses on wrapping vulnerable trees to maintain a stable environment for all species.

The project empowers women and youth by providing them with vital skills and business opportunities, reducing the high unemployment rates. Additionally, by focusing on ostrich conservation and sustainable land use, the initiative helps protect the fragile ecosystem of Matabeleland North.

The Monde Ostrich Breeding and Conservation Initiative aims to establish sustainable livelihoods for rural families in Matabeleland North, Zimbabwe, by engaging them in ostrich farming. The project will improve income generation while promoting environmental conservation, particularly focusing on empowering women and youth.

The Monde Osrich project will benefit 30 rural families, particularly women and youth, by providing technical training in business management and ostrich farming. Beyond economic benefits, the initiative promotes biodiversity conservation by encouraging sustainable land-use practices and helping protect the local ostrich population, a species increasingly at risk due to drought and environmental degradation.

This project supports the vital work of the Amaganyane Anti-Poaching Unit, the dedicated guardians of Matetsi Private Game Reserve. We employ, equip and train these rangers to combat poaching, protect wildlife, and safeguard the region’s biodiversity. Their efforts are crucial in ensuring the long-term survival of Africa’s iconic wildlife species.

By establishing the Amaganyane unit and providing them with advanced training, essential equipment, and logistical support, we are strengthening their capacity to effectively patrol the reserve, detect and deter poaching activities, and protect vulnerable species. This project directly contributes to the security and stability of the wider Kavango-Zambezi (KAZA) ecosystem.

Amaganyane Anti-Poaching Unit

This project addresses limited water access for wildlife in the vast Matetsi Private Game Reserve. We establish and maintain solar-powered waterholes and strategically located water sources. This initiative ensures the survival and well-being of diverse wildlife populations during dry spells, maintaining the reserve's ecological balance.

By providing consistent water access, we minimize stress on wildlife populations, reduce human-wildlife conflict, and support ecosystem stability. This project directly contributes to the resilience of biodiversity on Matetsi Private Game Reserve, ensuring the long-term health of the region’s unique wildlife.

Water for Wildlife on Matetsi Private Game Reserve

The project follows a participatory approach, with local labor and materials sourced to ensure sustainability and community engagement. The construction will follow Rural District Council’s approved building plans, proceeding in phases from foundation to completion. GRACE’s Monitoring and Evaluation team will oversee quality and progress with bi-weekly site inspections.

The school’s current infrastructure has proven successful, with over 180 students attending the early grades. Expanding the school will reduce the dropout rates in an area where 45,067 children dropped out of school during the last El Nino drought (United Nations, 2024). Community involvement and the use of local resources ensure long-term sustainability and ownership.

The Kituso Primary School Construction Project will expand an existing school in rural Monde, Zimbabwe by adding three new classrooms for grades 4 to 6. This project aims to address the shortage of classrooms and reduce the 25.2% of school-aged children that are not enrolled in education in Matabeleland North Province (The Chronicle ZW, 2024). 

Kituso Primary School currently serves 186 students up to Grade 3, but there are no classrooms for higher grades. To tackle this, the project will construct three additional classrooms, accommodating children aged 8-12 and allowing for a 50% increase in enrolment. This will help address the urgent need for educational infrastructure. The project will also create local jobs during construction and support long-term community development.

We conduct thorough ecological assessments to determine suitable translocation species and locations. We collaborate with wildlife authorities and experts for animal capture and transport. We establish acclimation bomas for smooth integration. We monitor post-release populations for adaptation and ecosystem impact.

Translocations address population imbalances and restore ecological functions. They improve genetic diversity and resilience. They mitigate the impacts of habitat fragmentation and loss. Successful examples like the waterbuck and impala translocations demonstrate their effectiveness.

This project focuses on strategic wildlife translocations to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem resilience within Matetsi Private Game Reserve. By relocating key species, we mitigate population imbalances, restore ecological functions, and ensure a thriving habitat for diverse wildlife. Successful examples include the 2022 waterbuck and 2024 impala translocations.

GRACE Foundation is excited to announce our new conservation project: reintroducing ostriches into the wild. Once a common sight in the 1990s, wild ostrich populations have drastically declined. Inspired by the rare sighting of a wild ostrich two years ago, this initiative aims to breed and release ostriches, restoring their presence in their natural habitat.

Breeding ostriches is a challenging but vital undertaking, as these birds are difficult to raise and do not always excel as parents. We have purchased 15 young ostriches at a cost of $9,000 to kickstart the project. Feeding, facilities, and veterinary care require significant resources, but our commitment to building a sustainable ostrich population remains steadfast.

This project began with the purchase of 15 ostriches, establishing proper facilities to ensure their care. The next phase includes acquiring a specialized incubator to improve hatchling survival rates, as natural success rates for ostrich chicks are low. Over time, the flock will grow under close monitoring to ensure their health. Once ready, the ostriches will be reintroduced into their natural habitat, where they can thrive and contribute to the ecosystem.

Ostriches are a critical part of their ecosystem, and their return will help restore balance. By improving survival rates through targeted breeding efforts and careful preparation, we aim to ensure these birds can thrive in the wild once again.

GRACE Foundation’s scouts patrol the Zambezi River to combat illegal netting and poaching, safeguarding the river’s ecosystem and its wildlife. With the support of Animal Survival International, our team has collected over 5,000 meters of illegal nets, protecting fish populations, hippos, and other animals from harm.

These efforts protect fish populations, deter poachers, and reduce threats to wildlife, ensuring the long-term health of this vital ecosystem.

GRACE Foundation identifies larger, at-risk trees in the Matetsi forests and wraps them with wire to prevent ring-barking by elephants. This simple yet effective method safeguards the trees while allowing elephants to coexist within the ecosystem. By protecting these remarkable species, we contribute to the overall health of Matetsi’s environment and the larger Matabeleland North region.

This initiative mitigates the impact of elephant activity on forests without harming the animals. By preserving key trees, we maintain biodiversity, support other wildlife, and ensure that the elephants’ habitat remains sustainable for future generations.

Using a specialised patrol boat, our Amaganyane anti-poaching scouts regularly monitor the Zambezi River to locate and remove illegal fishing nets. The team also keeps watch for poachers crossing the river, aiming to target hippos and other wildlife. By maintaining an active presence, we disrupt harmful activities and preserve the balance of the riverine ecosystem.

Our proactive patrols deter illegal activity and directly remove threats to the river’s biodiversity. By addressing these issues at their source, we protect fish stocks, wildlife, and the broader health of the Zambezi River, a critical lifeline for the region.

The Kituso Primary School Water Project is a GRACE Foundation Trust initiative in partnership with the Kituso community to ensure sustainable access to clean water for Kituso Primary School. By extending pipes from a nearby borehole, the project will provide essential water for drinking, hygiene, and other school activities, fostering a healthier learning environment for students.

This project aims to trench and install a water pipeline connecting an existing borehole to Kituso Primary School. Working hand-in-hand with the community, we ensure that the infrastructure is sustainable and meets the school’s needs. This initiative addresses a critical gap, enabling students to thrive in a cleaner, safer environment.

Our anti-poaching initiative starts by rescuing dogs from Friends Animal Foundation. The dogs undergo a rigorous six-month training program led by experts to prepare them for anti-poaching patrols. Once trained, they join our scout team, working alongside rangers to protect wildlife. When their service concludes, the dogs are retired into loving homes to enjoy a peaceful, well-deserved rest.

Rescuing and training dogs combines two missions: giving abandoned animals a second chance and leveraging their skills to combat poaching. This holistic approach ensures the dogs thrive while making a measurable impact on wildlife conservation.
